Eva Perez: Balancing Motherhood and a Medical Career at UEI Gardena

Home-cooked meals, clean clothes folded with care, a tidy space, and a predictable schedule are a few things that make Eva Perez’s house a home. She takes great pride in leading the home she’s created for her five young children.

Her children, aged between two and twelve, are her primary motivation. As a child of the foster care system herself, Eva grew up without a consistent mother or father figure in her life. She knows the responsibility and impact she has on her own children. “I am their role model. I love helping others, which is why I’m going back to school to do what I love and show my kids the importance of education and making money to support themselves one day.”

Inspired by her children and wanting to lead by example, Eva enrolled in UEI Gardena’s Medical Assistant program. Her interest in the medical field began at young age as she watched family and friends endure a variety of health issues. When she became a mother, she strove for a deeper understanding of basic health needs and emergency responses to ensure her children received the best care. “Nothing makes me happier than being able to help people and potentially change their lives,” Eva says.

While running her busy home, Eva has taken advantage of UEI’s flexible program hours that allow her to be present as a mom and as a student. She’s developed a meticulous routine to manage her responsibilities. “I had to learn how to create a realistic schedule that includes time for school work and personal activities,” she notes. “Setting goals and breaking large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps has been crucial.”

Eva also emphasizes the importance of staying organized and maintaining a clean and orderly home, which helps her remain calm and productive. “Setting schedules and routines helps me run a smooth program in my own home, so I can have time for myself — mentally and physically — and continue with my education.”

At UEI Gardena, Eva is met with the same clean and organized environment, helping her feel confident as she progresses through the program. Support from staff and her teacher, Ms. Rios, has been particularly motivating. “Ms. Rios is a smart, sweet person who takes her time to teach and show us hands-on training,” Eva explains. “Thank you, Ms. Rios, for inspiring me to finish my medical assistant career.”

After she completes the program, Eva hopes to work in a pediatric setting to play on her strengths and continue to grow in the field. She also plans to continue learning by pursuing a certification in phlebotomy. Her drive for success goes beyond personal achievement — she hopes to create a legacy of resilience and dedication for her children.

“My children are my everything. They are my backbone. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know where I would be,” Eva reflects. Through her experiences at UEI Gardena, she is not only transforming her own life, but also setting an inspiring example for her children and countless others.
